為脣形花科一年生草本植物，植株高度約50～100公分。全株具有芳香，耐暑性強，需栽培於光照充足之處。夏季時於枝條頂端抽出紫色花穗，小花為白~淡桃色。花穗及嫩葉可應用於肉類或海鮮料理，高貴的香氣是夏季餐桌上不可或缺的香料之一。
